Warehouse Automation Glossary

This glossary defines common warehouse automation, robotics and intralogistics terms, including AMRs, AGVs, conveyors, sorting systems and software concepts. The definitions reflect how these technologies are applied in real-world automation projects across Africa.

A

AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot)

A mobile robot that navigates dynamically using sensors and software without fixed paths.

AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle)

A mobile robot that follows predefined routes such as wires, markers or tracks.

Accumulation Conveyor

A conveyor designed to buffer items without contact, preventing damage and congestion.

B

Batch Picking

A picking method where multiple orders are picked simultaneously to improve efficiency.

Barcode Scanning

The use of barcode readers to identify and track items within automated workflows.

C

Conveyor System

A mechanical system used to transport items between locations within a facility.

Cross-Docking

A process where goods are transferred directly from inbound to outbound with minimal storage.

D

Distribution Centre (DC)

A facility used to receive, store and dispatch goods to downstream locations.

E

End-of-Line Automation

Automation that handles sorting, packing or palletising at the end of a process.

F

Fulfilment Centre

A warehouse focused on processing customer orders, commonly used in e-commerce.

G

Goods-to-Person Picking

A system where inventory is brought to operators, reducing walking time and errors.

H

High-Throughput System

An automation system designed to process large volumes of goods in a short time.

I

Intralogistics

The management and automation of internal material flows within a facility.

K

Kitting

The process of grouping multiple components into a single kit for assembly or dispatch.

Line Feeding

The automated delivery of materials to production lines in manufacturing environments.

M

Mini Sorter

A compact automated sorting system designed for small items or limited space.

Motorised Roller Conveyor (MDR)

A conveyor using powered rollers for controlled movement and accumulation.

O

Order Consolidation

The process of grouping items from different picking zones into a single order.

P

Pallet Handling System

Automation designed to move, store or buffer palletised loads.

Pick-to-Light

A system that uses lights to guide operators during picking.

R

Robotic Picking

The use of robotic arms or systems to pick items automatically.

S

Sortation System

An automated system that routes items to destinations based on predefined logic.

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

A unique identifier for a product in inventory.

T

Throughput

The volume of goods processed by a system over a given period.

W
